495,047. Disposition of guns on aircraft. MARTIN, J. May 6, 1937, No. 12949. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXI] Guns on aircraft are protected from, the effects of freezing by mounting them in one or more compartments fed by a conduit system with air heated by the propelling engine and passed through the compartment or compartments in close proximity to the guns. The Figure shows an arrangement in which air enters at 9 a pipe 8 adjacent the exhaust manifold 7 and passes by conduit 10 and nozzles 12, 11, either to a compartment 4 for a number of wing guns 1, or to separate compartments 2 for each of such guns. The heated air leaves the compartments through openings 18 or by outlets 20 leading to a discharge pipe 19. The air leaving the engine compartment may pass by way of a collector 16 to the conduit 10. In a modification, the air is heated by passage over the engine radiator. In a further modification, the heated air is passed over guns mounted in compartments below and in front of the cockpit.
