Abstract
494,943. Surface - hardening metal articles. SHORTER, A. E., and SHORTER PROCESS CO., Ltd. April 29, 1937, No. 12256. [Class 72] In an apparatus for surface-hardening a plurality of metal articles simultaneously, the articles are supported so that they are in axial alignment close to a plurality of heating and quenching nozzles, at least one heating and quenching nozzle being provided for each article, the heating &c. nozzles, being mounted on traversing mechanism so that the nozzles traverse the articles simultaneously. A number of gear wheels 2 are secured by bushings 3 on a rotatable shaft 1 and the teeth of the wheels are aligned by a trueing bar 4 or other device. A gas mixing chamber 5 mounted so that it can be traversed transversely to the wheels is disposed parallel to the shaft 1, and is provided with a separate burner 6 for each wheel 1. Cooling jets 9 are also mounted on the burners, and the oxygen and fuel gas is fed to the chamber 6 by flexible pipes 7. After the surface of one tooth of each wheel has been treated, the wheels are rotated to bring the next surface to be treated into position. In a modification, separate burners are mounted on a slotted plate which is adapted to be slid in a direction parallel to the surface to be treated. Two burners may be mounted on the traversing device so that either both sides of one tooth or one side of two different teeth may be treated simultaneously.
