Abstract

494,821. Charging batteries. AKTIEBOLAGET LATEX, and VIGREN, S. D. April 4, 1938, No. 10243. Convention date, April 2, 1937. [Class 38 (iv)] A two rate charging system in which charging at one rate is interrupted at two alternative values of the battery voltage depending upon the load on the battery, comprises a relay with two opposed windings, one being permanently connected across the battery and the other being switched into series or parallel with the first and in opposition thereto by the switching on of the load as in a telephone system, so that the charging voltage can be higher when there is no load than when the battery is supplying a load. The battery B is supplied from an A.C. source through rectifiers L, a smoothing choke D and condenser C being provided. Resistance M2 is switched in or out, to give the low or high charging rate, by relay R which is controlled by relay KR responsive to either high or low voltage across the battery according to whether the switch X is opened or closed by a load such as a telephone call. The first winding I of relay KR is permanently connected across the battery but the second winding II is connected across the battery only when switch X is closed by the load. When switch X is open and the battery is fully charged, winding I operates the relay KR thus de-energizing relay R and putting resistance M2 into the circuit to give the lower charging rate. When switch X is closed by the switching in of a load, winding II overcomes winding I so that the relay KR is first de-energized (thereby if necessary short circuiting resistance M2 and giving momentarily the high charging rate) and then energizes relay KR again if the voltage is above a certain value which is the maximum working voltage of the battery and is lower than the value to which the winding I responds. In a modification, the relay R is dispensed with and resistance M2 is switched in or out by relay KR. Switch X may be operated by a relay responsive to current. To increase the sensitiveness of relay KR, part of the winding II may cut out by an additional contact on the relay.
