Abstract

<PICT:0494231/IV/1> Material such as imitation leather is made by impregnating flexible material such as fabric and felted or carded products such as cotton wool, slivers and floss silk by laying the material on a horizontal stationary surface which is preferably heated and pressing into it a layer of impregnating material with which it is coated. The coating may be applied to the upper surface of the material after laying it on the surface or to one or both sides during its passage to the surface. A suitable impregnating composition comprises rubber latex, water, a wetting-agent, a stabilizer, an accelerator and a substance containing a vulcanizing agent such as sulphur in a finely ground condition, to which size and volatile substances may be added. As shown, a carriage 3 mounted on wheels 6 distributes liquid from a container 5 over the surface of a layer of material 2 laid on a heated table 1, and the coating is pressed into the material by a following roll 4, the surface of which is also wetted by the liquid.
