Abstract
494,098. Consuming fumes and gases. HOUDRY PROCESS CORPORATION. April 19, 1937, No. 11119. Convention date, May 8, 1936. [Class 51 (i)] Gases containing carbon monoxide or other combustible fluid, such as fumes from the regeneration of catalytic material in converters for the treatment of hydrocarbons, are passed through a combustion zone containing contact or catalytic material where they are oxidized, and leave the combustion zone at a temperature not exceeding 1200‹ F., heat being withdrawn from the combustion zone by the gaseous stream prior to entering such zone. The gases may be at superatmospheric pressure and after leaving the combustion zone may be utilized for power purposes. Fig. 1 shows one form of apparatus for treating the gases which are supplied through a pipe 11 with or without air, water or fuel to a coil 11a surrounding the combustion tube 5 containing the contact or catalytic mass m. The gases enter the base of the tube 5 which is secured to headers 6, 7 and enclosed by a casing 14 and insulating-material 16. The coil 11a may increase in diameter or the pitch of the coil may decrease towards the lower header to secure a progressive pick-up of heat by radiation from the walls of the combustion tube. Alternatively, the coil may have plates of increasing size attached thereto to increase the heat absorbed. Air may be added to the stream through a pipe 31 adjacent the inlet 10 to the combustion tube. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the gas is supplied to a chamber 25 from which it passes into the contact or catalytic material m in a chamber 20 through tubes 27a discharging at the lower end of perforated tubes 27b closed at their ends and provided with internal baffles 27c, 27d. The gases leave the combustion zone through perforated pipes 28 and chamber 26. When the gases enter at a temperature of 1000‹ F. or more and contain sufficient oxygen, the contact mass may consist of highly porous material such as pumice, kaolin, firebrick and other blends of silica and alumina. If the gases are at about 900‹ F., the contact mass may consist of metallic oxides and compounds including those of copper, iron, cobalt, nickel and lead. Metals may be used in the form of turnings, or metals and metallic compounds may be finely divided and incorporated in supports of silica and alumina. Where the gases are below 900‹ F., air or other oxidizing medium is added to them. Specifications 6732 /12, 276,300, [both in Class 51 (i)], 414,779, 423,866, and 487,785, [all in Group III], are referred to.
