Abstract
494,068. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Feb. 10, 1938, No. 4240. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A liquid-cooled, high-pressure vapour discharge lamp 1 is mounted in a reflector, within a casing which is provided with a radiation window 13 and contains a guide member 6 for the cooling liquid which is so formed as to allow the members 16, 22 for the supply and discharge of cooling liquid to be provided at one end of the device, the current supply members being at the other end thereof. The reflector comprises an open sided tube 5, to which the lamp 1 is secured, the open side being closed by a plate 6 except for a slit 7 ; the lamp is inserted in an insulating body 9 which is fixed in a flanged extension of the tube 5 and which also carries a contact member 10 electrically connected to one of the lamp electrodes, the other being connected to the tube 5 and thence to the casing 11 which is earthed. The lamp 1, reflector 4, guide member and contact 10 form an exchangeable unit, which is arranged in a cylindrical bore in the casing 11 to which it is secured by a cap nut 12. The other end of the casing is closed by a wall 14 which is apertured to allow the cooling fluid to flow out through the tube 22 and also receives the fluid inlet pipe 16. The contact 10 engages a contact sleeve on the cable 20, which is secured to the device by a clip 21. The path of the cooling fluid is indicated by arrows, and the fluid in the chamber below the window 13 forms a liquid lens. The guide member 6 like the window 13 is preferably transparent to visible, but absorbs ultra-violet rays.
