Abstract

493,981. Centrifugal fans. DAY, C. (Steel Products Engineering Co.) Oct. 26, 1937 No. 29161. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XII] In apparatus for regulating the air supply to a furnace grate of the kind wherein a damper for regulating the air inlet of a forced draught-fan is operated automatically by movement of a member caused by displacement of a liquid subject to air pressure in the conduit leading from the fan to the space beneath the furnace grate, the damper is in the form of a flat rotary disc mounted on a pivot at rightangles to the disc and connected to the said member and is provided with air inlet openings and sector shaped arms which co-operate with openings in a fixed plate. As shown in Fig. 2, the casing 21 of the fan 24 has an air inlet 23 to which is secured a flange 29 with radial arms 35 and a central bearing 34 for a spindle 33 on which the rotary damper 30 is mounted. The damper is provided with air inlet openings 36 spaced apart by radial arms 37 which serve to open and close apertures formed between radial plates 40 secured to the flange 29. To the damper 30 is secured an annular chamber 42, Figs. 2 and 3, containing liquid 43 and provided with a partition 44 to form compartments 45, 46 above the liquid level. The compartment 45 is in communication by means of a flexible pipe 48 with the fan discharge conduit and variation of pressure therein causes displacement of the liquid and also of the annular chamber 42 and damper 30 connected therewith. The damper carries a counterweight which always tends to restore it to its closed position. The end of the pipe 48 connected to the fan discharge conduit projects transversely into the conduit and has an air inlet opening disposed at right-angles to the air flow. A modification is' shown in Fig. 8 in which the damper 130 on the fan inlet is actuated through a lever 152 by a float 139 arranged in one compartment 143 of a chamber 140 containing liquid, the other compartment 142 of which is in communication through an opening 144 with the fan discharge conduit 118.
