Abstract

Oils for lubricants or for additions to other lubricating oils are manufactured by condensing aliphatic hydrocarbons of m.w. at least 170 and containing at least 13,5 parts of H for each 100 parts of C, or derivatives of such hydrocarbons containing O, in the presence of a small amount of isocyclic compounds containing at least three rings, and of a large amount of cyclic compounds containing one or two rings. The aliphatic hydrocarbons preferably consist wholly or mainly of paraffin wax, which in turn is preferably pre-halogenated. Preferably 0,1-5 per cent of the isocyclic compounds and 5-20 per cent of the cyclic compounds are employed. In the example, 100 parts of chlorinated paraffin wax containing about 12 per cent of Cl are diluted with 100 parts of lubricating oil or ethylene chloride and condensed with 10 parts of naphthalene and 4 parts of a fraction boiling from 330-380 DEG C. of a destructive hydrogenation product from mineral coal, the condensation being effected in the presence of 6 parts of AlCl3 and 5 parts of ZnO. The reaction product is freed from insoluble substances by centrifuge and from the diluent by distillation. There is obtained, 30 parts of unchanged wax and light lubricating oil, a distillation residue of 70 parts of an oil of viscosity 60 DEG Engler at 100 DEG C. If 0,05 per cent of the oil be added to a machine oil obtained from German mineral oil, it lowers the settling point from -3 to -20 DEG C. Specifications 349,071, 407,379, and 410,833 are referred to.
