Abstract

492,474. Raising liquids by gas pressure. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., W. C., BENTLEY, H., and HENSHAW, D. M. June 30, 1937, No. 18148. [Class 102 (ii)] In apparatus for raising liquids, e.g. sewage, of the type in which two containers are discharged alternately by compressed air, an air-distributing valve is dispensed with, the air being circulated by a reversible compressor. The latter may be driven through reversible gearing, or by a reversible electric motor. Each container 1 is filled through a pipe 3 with. a sluice valve 6 and check valves 7,8. The containers discharge into a common pipe 5 A rod 16 in each container carries floats 17, 18 and a piston 19 moving in guides 20. An extension of the rod 16 is connected to a crank arm on a spindle 22, which extends outside the casing 13 and carries a double-armed lever 21. One arm of the lever carries a weight 23, while the other is connected to a rod operating a switch in the circuit of the compressor motor. The casing 13 of each container is connected as shown to a reversible rotary compressor 27, preferably of the sliding-vane type. In the position shown the switch of the container 1 is closed and the compressor is rotated to withdraw air from the other container and supply it to the container 1. When the container 1 has been discharged, the floats fall and open the switch, and the compressor stops. The compressor is restarted in the opposite direction when the second container is full and closes its switch. Simultaneous closing of the two switches is prevented by an interlocking bar.
