Abstract

[Class 78 (i)] In a machine a for processing canned goods, into which the cans are delivered by a revolving valve g, the valve has can pockets i which' serve as gauging means for the cans whereby any can of irregular or inaccurate size which would be liable to jam in the machine will not fully enter the valve pocket i, whereupon the valve g will jam and the drive to the valve will be held up through a friction clutch k or slipping connection in the drive. As shown, the pockets i have two tapering sides and a rounded bottom and two flat ends and are supplied with cans by a conveyer f. An oversize can will project from the pocket and be wedged against the valve casing h, pre. venting rotation of the valve. The machine is driven from a shaft p, a pinion q on which gears with a wheel r on the machine drum shaft. Wheel r rotates a wheel s which through friction clutch k drives the shaft o of the valve g. The conveyer f, which is supplied with cans from a shoot e, is driven by a chain m from a sprocket wheel n on shaft o so that it stops when the valve g stops. The frame carrying conveyer f is mounted on a pivot t and can, by rotation of the band wheel u of a screw- and-nut device v, be swung out of position to give access to the interior of the valve for removal of a trapped can.
