Abstract

Type-metal or like alloys containing lead and either tin or antimony, or both, are recovered from the dross formed when re-casting them by fusing it with zinc chloride. The dross and zinc chloride are fused together while stirring or, preferably, the dross is caused to pass downward through the molten salt. The mixture may contain from 1 to 30 per cent of zinc chloride, in general from 5 to 10 per cent; and the temperature of fusion is not above 600 DEG C. One or more oxide-dissolving salts of low fusing-point, such as sodium bisulphate, may be mixed with the p zinc chloride. The composition of the type-metal is generally within the limits 55 to 90 per cent lead; 5 to 26 per cent antimony; 2 to 34 per cent tin; and 0 to 5 per cent copper.
