Abstract

490,677. Winding yarns &c. HOLT, Ltd., T., and HOLT, H. Feb. 16, 1937, No. 4606. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for winding thread or yarn upon a cone, driven by a revolving drum, by a reciprocating thread guide, means are provided for automatically raising the yarn out of the path of the guide on breakage of the thread and at the end of the winding and for ensuring that winding movement is imparted to the varn in advance of the downward movement of the thread into the path of the traversing thread guide, such means comprising a rod 36 located in proximity to the path of traverse guide 16 and hingedly connected at one end 36<1> to a part of the machine frame, a rod 37 connected to the other end of the rod 36 and connected at its lower end to a trigger 39, a lost motion connection 41, 42 between the trigger and a link 43 pivoted to an arm 25<11> extending from the usual trip mechanism for operating the knock-off mechanism of the machine, and a detent 44 with which the trigger 39 is adapted to engage ; the lost motion connection permits a time lag between the initial movement of the trip mechanism and the operation of the trigger. When the thread A terminates or breaks during winding or is broken at the end of the winding, a feeler a wire 30 on a pivoted lever 31 moves up and cam follower 33 on the lever moves into the path of a rotating cam 22 which moves the lever 31 and a lever 23 in which it is pivoted so that a stud 25<1> on the trip lever 25 moves from the horizontal part of a slot 23<1> in the lever 23 and allows a spring 27 to rock the trip lever 25 about its pivot 26 ; a pawl 28 on the lever 25 then engages a rack 29 on the knock-off lever 18 which raises the cone-holder 11 and cone 12 from contact with the driving drum 14. At the same time the trigger 39 is rocked to raise the rod 37 until a nose on the trigger engages the spring-pressed detent 44, which is mounted in the bracket 21, the rod 36 being thus raised about its end 36<1> to lift the thread out of the traversing thread guide 16 ; a further detent 45, controlled by a light spring in the bracket 21, engages below a hooked part of the rod 37 and assists in holding the latter in the raised position. When winding is recommenced by depressing a handle 35 to reset the knock-off mechanism, the slot 42 prevents movement of the rod 37 until the pin 41. is engaged by the end of the slot when the trigger 39 is tripped and the rod 37 falls by gravity or added weight and causes the rod 36 to fall and allow the yarn which is then being wound on the cone 12, to fall into the path of the traversing guide 16 and become threaded therein. The rod 36 may be arranged at an inclination so as to control the tension of the yarn as it traversed from the large to the small end of the cone or it may be arranged horizontally and carried by levers moving vertically in guides and operated by the knock-off mechanism.
