Abstract

490,393. Centrifugal separators. CAREY, W. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1937, No. 4549. [Class 23] Powdered materials are divided into coarse and fine fractions by the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and an opposing stream of fluid; the radial velocity of the fluid varies so that the pressure of the fluid balances the centrifugal force acting upon any particle of the size corresponding to the desired line of separation. A rotor 1 on the shaft 3 rotates in the casing 2 and has a number of radial plates 5 surmounted by a cowl 6. The materials to be classified are supplied through the tubes 8 and are constrained by the cylinder 7 to pass through an annular slit 9 in the cowl 6 to the inside of the rotor where they are subject to centrifugal action. A suction fan at the orifice 10 draws air or other gas through the vents 11 in the casing, and through the rotor from its circumference. The cowl is designed so that the inward radial velocity of the gas diminishes and the force it exerts upon a particle of the required size just balances the centrifugal force. Particles larger than this size move outwards and drop into the casing while the smaller particles are drawn through the orifice 10. The radial plates 5 have slots 14 to prevent material from accumulating between the plates, and the base of the rotor has circular ridges 16. In a modification, the rotor works on a horizontal axis and has rings of plates which forms zigzag channels for the passage of the materials and the gas.
