Abstract
Rubber-like polymerization products are manufactured by polymerizing butadiene or its substitution products, e.g. isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, phenylbutadiene or chlorbutadienes, in the presence of solid highly polymerized isobutylene, by simple heating in the presence of sodium or peroxides as catalysts or in emulsion in the presence of peroxides. The process may be carried out by dissolving the polymerized isobutylene in the monomeric butadiene or substitution product thereof, adding inert solvents if desired, and then polymerizing. In examples: (1) polymerized isobutylene of molecular weight 50,000 is dissolved in butadiene and cyclohexane and the mixture is heated with sodium; the product may be vulcanized with the addition of active gas carbon, zinc oxide, a softener, e.g. stearic acid, a vulcanization accelerator and an anti-ager; (2) polymerized isobutylene of molecular weight 100,000 is employed in the process of (1); the product is compared with that obtained by mixing separately polymerized butadiene and isobutylene; (3) polymerized isobutylene is dissolved in b -chlorobutadiene containing some hydroquinone, and the solution is heated with benzoyl peroxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 469,976 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).ALSO:Rubber-like polymerization products are manufactured by polymerizing butadiene or its substitution products, e.g. isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, phenylbutadiene or chlorobutadienes, in the presence of solid highly polymerized isobutylene, by simple heating in the presence of sodium or peroxides as catalysts or in emulsion in the presence of peroxides.
