Abstract

490,112. Gravity-separation apparatus. TRIGGS, W. W. (Dorr Co., Inc.) Nov. 3, 1937, No. 30162. [Class 111] In the treatment of liquids by flocculation and subsequent sedimentation, the liquid is fed to a zone in which it is subjected to flocculation by gentle mechanical agitation and is then passed into a communicating zone which surrounds or encircles the flocculating zone and in which the solids are separated by sedimentation. In the construction shown, a sedimentation tank 1 is provided with an effluent outlet 7, and a sludgedischarge outlet 24 into which the solids are raked by rotatable mechanism SM. The liquid to be treated enters the tank through a vertical pipe 43, on which is rotatably mounted a structure 28 supporting the mechanism SM. A flocculation zone surrounding the structure 28 is defined by a drum 40, the base of which is formed with apertures 42. The drum is supported by bars 29, the ends of which rest on the wall of the tank 1. The bars also support a motor 30 which drives paddles 47 whereby flocculation is effected. A coagulating chemical for assisting flocculation may be added to the liquid under treatment.
