489,931. Wind tunnels. MIEVILLE, A. L., and SLAZENGERS, Ltd. Dec. 5, 1936, No. 33439. [Class 4] [Also in Group XIX] A wind tunnel for testing shuttlecocks or like sports apparatus comprises a chamber into which the shuttlecocks are introduced, means for promoting a flow of air through the chamber, adjustable means for varying this flow and means to indicate the setting of the adjustable means. A fan 7 driven by a motor 8 promotes an air flow which is caused to become vertical by the vanes 9 and honeycomb 12 before entering the test chamber 1. The air flow is adjusted through the medium of slotted plates 3, 4 by the movement of the lug 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is spring influenced and attached by cable 21 and lever to a rod 19 carrying an indicator 18 reading against a scale 17. The top of the chamber 1 has an internal stream-lined restriction 25 and a draught excluder 26. A baffle 27 may be swung over the centre of the chamber. The shuttlecock is introduced into the chamber from above and by moving the rod 19 and hence the lug 23 the air flow is adjusted until the shuttlecock floats in the beam of light projected by the system 16, as seen through the transparent upper portion 14 of the chamber 1, the setting then indicating the speed characteristics of the shuttlecocks. A number of strings 15 can prevent the shuttlecock falling to the bottom of the chamber and the device is supported on three screw-adjusted legs. The fan and motor can alternatively be placed above the chamber 1 in place of the baffle 27.
