Abstract
In making reproductions of mushrooms wherein the mushroom is enclosed in refractory material, calcined, and the ash removed, and the mould so obtained is used for making the reproduction, the refractory material is applied in two layers, the first being finely-grained. The layers may be formed of a composition of one-third plaster and two-thirds silica or quartz sand together with water. The mould is maintained at a temperature equal to or greater than the melting point of the material to form the pattern or reproduction which is cast or pressed into the mould. The refractory cover or mould may be placed in a metal casing. A vent is left for the escape of steam or volatile products from the mushroom. The material for forming the pattern may be metal such as lead, synthetic resin, or gelatine. It may be poured while molten into the mould and subjected to centrifugal action. The pattern may be coloured and used as a reproduction or it may be used for making reproductions in other ways in gelatine, synthetic resin, or ebonite.
