Abstract
489,581. Endless chain elevators. ROBERTSON, A. W. Feb. 3, 1937, No. 3156. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group X] A road-scarifying machine comprises a series of vertically-adjustable cutters rotatable about vertical or nearly vertical axes, and one or more scoops arranged behind the cutters and cooperating with means for collecting the loosened road material. In the construction shown, the wheels 3 of the machine are fitted with endless tracks 4 and are driven by internal-combustion engines which also drive a transverse shaft 6. This shaft is geared to a longitudinal shaft 10 which gears with a transverse shaft 13 mounted in a casing 14. Bevel wheels 16 on the shaft 13 mesh with compound bevel and spur wheels 18, 19, which in turn mesh with spur wheels 20. The spur wheels 19, 20 are mounted on vertical shafts 24 upon which tool holders 25 are slidably but non-rotatably mounted. The tools 27 are held in the holders by cone-shaped clamping members. Each holder is mounted to rotate in transverse frame members 28, 29, and each has an annular groove engaged by a bar 31 which effects the vertical adjustment of the holders. Movements of the bar are effected by a hand wheel 36, the shaft of which is geared to a shaft 34 carrying toothed wheels 33 which engage with racks 32 carried by the bar. The material loosened by the tools is collected by a scoop 5 which can be raised and lowered by rack-and-pinion mechanism geared to the shaft of a hand wheel 46. The sides of the scoop converge towards a throat 5a which carries the pivot pin 52 of the frame 51 of an elevator 15. The upper end of the frame has a pin-and-slot connection 53, 54, with a shaft mounted between two uprights 55. The buckets 49 are mounted on a chain 50 which is driven by a chain 67 passing around a sprocket wheel 68 on the spindle of the upper chain wheel of the elevator. The chain 67 also passes around a sprocket wheel 69 on a shaft 70, which shaft is driven by the shaft 6. In order to allow for the angular adjustment of the elevator, when the scoop is raised or lowered, the chain 67 is passed around a sprocket wheel 71 on a pivoted lever 72 controlled by a hand crank 73. The elevator may discharge directly into a hopper 56 or on to a shoot 57 which may have a byepass 58 adapted to allow the material to fall into the hopper.
