Abstract
489,568. Casting-machines. WILLIAMS, E. R. Jan. 29, 1937, No. 2714. [Class 83 (i)] Moulds.-In casting bar stock, molten metal is poured into the top of a thin-walled tubular mould 15, of copper or other good conductor and circular or rectangular in cross-section, and a shallow stream of cooling fluid is passed at a high speed along the outer face of this tube 15 to solidify the surface 41 of the cast metal at once. The solidified metal may be drawn continuously or intermittently from the bottom of the tube, as by wheels 32. In casting steel, the tube 15 may be 30 inches long, 6 inches in diameter and <1>/16 of an inch in thickness. Water may be forced through an annular space 17 about <1>/16 of an inch in radial thickness under a pressure of from 35 to 150 or more pounds per square inch. The tube is spaced from the jacket 16 by projections 18 or by longitudinal ribs which may be integral, welded, or brazed and may rest on or fit in grooves in the jacket. The space 17 may be deeper towards the lower and exit end 117. The withdrawn bar may be cooled by water discharged by holes 34 in a pipe 35. The pouring box 22 may have a projecting nozzle instead of the plain hole 23 shown.
