Abstract

Films and foils are prepared by casting a solution of a polymerized vinyl ester containing an addition of a condensation product of a polyhydric alcohol with an ether-dicarboxylic acid having the formula <FORM:0489550/IV/1> , where R and R1 each stands for a hydrocarbon residue, upon a support, and after evaporation of the solvent, removing the resulting film or foil from the support. The polymerized vinyl esters may be prepared from vinyl acetate, vinyl chloracetate, acrylic and methacrylic acid methyl and ethyl esters, or mixtures thereof, and also from mixtures of vinyl acetate and maleic acid methyl or ethyl ester. The condensation product may be the esters of diglycollic, methyl diglycollic or dihydracrylic acids with glycols, such as 1 : 3-butylene glycol, 2 : 3 : 4-trihydroxybutane, the dihydroxy-propanes, the mixtures of polyhydric alcohols obtained by hydrogenating sugars, glycerol, polyglycols, erythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane and the ethers thereof which contain more than one free hydroxyl group. The films and foils are suitable as interlayers for glass, adhesive sheets for veneering or sticking together fabrics or paper, or packing foils. In examples, films are prepared from (1) a solution in acetone of polyvinyl acetate and a condensation product of 1 : 3-butylene glycol and diglycollic acid; (2) a solution in ethyl acetate of polyvinyl chloracetate and a condensation product of 1 : 3-butylene glycol and diglycollic acid; (3) a solution in acetone of polyvinyl acetate and a condensation product of dimethoxy-octylene glycol and diglycollic acid; (4) a solution in ethyl acetate of a mixed polymer from vinyl acetate and maleic acid dimethyl ester, and a condensation product of diglycollic acid and dibutylene glycol; (5) a mixed polymer from vinyl acetate and acrylic acid butyl ester, and a condensation product of diglycollic acid and 1 : 3-butylene-glycol; (6) a solution in methylene chloride of polyvinyl acetate and a condensation product of dilactic acid with octylene glycol; (7) a solution in ethyl acetate of polyvinyl chloracetate and a condensation product of dilactic acid with dimethoxy-octylene-glycol; (8) a mixed polymer from vinyl acetate with acrylic acid butyl ester, and a condensation product of 1 : 3-butylene glycol and dihydracrylic acid; (9) a solution in ethyl acetate of polyacrylic acid methyl ester and a condensation product of 1 : 3-butylene-glycol with diglycollic acid; (10) a solution in acetone of a mixture of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloracetate and a condensation product of 1 : 3-butylene glycol with diglycollic acid.
