Abstract

489,514. Speedometers; odometers ; accelerometers. DOWTY, G. H. Feb. 27, 1937, No. 5982. [Class 106 (iii)] A device showing distance and/or maximum speed of run upon the ground of an aircraft is driven by a landing wheel of the aircraft through clutching means engageable by the deflection of a ground-loaded part of the aircraft. An acceleration recorder may be incorporated with the device for testing brake efficiency. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the undercarriage of the aircraft incorporates a telescopic shock-absorber strut 1, 2, the part 2 having pivoted on it a spring controlled lever 5 to which is pivoted the rod 7 having a stop 7a moving under the control of a spring 10 in a tube 8 pivoted to the part 1. The lever 5 carries the device 11 showing distance and/or maximum speed and driven by a wheel 12 from the aircraft wheel 4 either frictionally in which case the wheel 4 is provided with an annular track or by teeth on the wheel 12 engaging a ring of teeth on the wheel 4. The wheel 12 mav be made of solid rubber or fibre or may be provided with a rubber tyre. When the aircraft becomes air-borne relative movement between the parts 1 and 2 causes rotation of the lever 5 and disengagement of wheels 4 and 12. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the pinion 24D is rigid with a shaft secured to the hub cap of the wheel 24 and engages with a pinion 26 driving the distance and /or maximum speed indicating device 28 through the flexible cable 27. The pinion 26 is mounted on a lever 25 pivoted on one part 22 of a telescopic shock-absorber strut 21, 22, the lever being connected to the part 21 through the telescopic compression link 29, 30, 31 and collar 32 which is adjustable on the part 21 so that the pinions 26 and 24D engage at a predeterminedminimum ground load of the aircraft. The pinions 24D and 26 can be disengaged by pulling on the cable 33 connected to the lever 25. Movement between the parts 21 and 22 due to rough ground is allowed for by the spring 31. The indicating device, Fig. 4, comprises a speed driven disc 44 having a pin 43 for rotating a pointer 41, frictionally mounted on the spindle 42 to give maximum readings, and a distance register 45 zeroized by a knob 46.
