Abstract

489,424. Ventilating rooms and other enclosures. BURGESS LABORATORIES, Inc., C. F. Nov. 24, 1936, Nos. 32188 and 32189. Convention dates, Feb. 4 and Aug. 14. [Classes 20 (iv) and 137] In the ventilation of enclosures such as rooms, churches, road or rail vehicles, and aeroplanes, the air is supplied through foraminous sheets spaced from a wall or ceiling, and having an air-impervious backing the extent of which is adjusted so that slight pressure from a conditioned air supply is built up in a plenum chamber between the foraminous sheets and the wall. The ceiling 19 is traversed by bolts 20 suspending beams 18 to which are attached strips 21 holding the foraminous layer of perforated tiles 23. Within each tile is a panel or backing 24 of sound absorbing material such as wood fibre or felt having a covering of air-impervious material, the panels being spaced from the tiles. Ventilating air is supplied by a conduit 31 to the space 38 above the foraminous layer through which the air percolates, and enters the room without draught, the used air being exhausted through grilles 35 near the floor level. A duct 27 brings the outside air to a conditioning unit 28 which operates in conjunction with a refrigerator 29, or heater 32 a fan 30 supplying the conditioned air to the delivery conduit 31, which is lined near its delivery end with sound absorbing material 33 faced with foraminous smooth surfaced material 34. In a modification, the air may be supplied to hollow beams which support the foraminous tiles and which have openings in their upper parts to allow of circulation of the air over the tiles. The ventilating air may be heated or cooled by the use of pipes 67, Fig. 7, in which circulate heating or cooling fluid, these pipes being embedded in the concrete ceiling 65. The foraminous tiles 70 are supported below sound absorbing panels 79, and a fan 76 draws up air from the room and discharges it into the plenum chamber 77 under a pressure which forces it through the tiles. In Fig. 11, a blower 10 draws air through an intake 12, and supplies it under pressure to a plenum chamber 14 between the roof 18 of a vehicle and an apertured member 16, below which is a second ceiling or sheet 24 which causes a still further distribution of the air. Supporting beams 20 are apertured to allow passage of the ventilating air which may be conditioned before use. Another modification describes the ventilation, in a similar manner, of a railway car. Specifications 327,186, [Class 20 (iv)], and 489,423 are referred to.
