Abstract

Iron oxide pigments of various tints or undertones are prepared by mixing a sulphate or a chloride of iron with kieselguhr, or with ground quartz or flint, and roasting the mixture until the iron compound is decomposed. The heating may take place in a covered vessel, or in the presence of an excess of air. The iron salt and the silica may be made into a paste with water, and the paste heated, to drive off the water, before being roasted. According to an example, ferrous sulphate is ground with kieselguhr, and the mixture roasted at 650 DEG C. for 3-4 hours, giving a red oxide pigment having an orange undertone.
