488,104. Boxes for fruit &c. ELKING- TON, H. D. (Bank of The Manhattan Co., Trustee) Dec. 30, 1936, No. 35763. [Class 18] A box to hold fruit &c. is of polygonal shape with rounded, blunt, or cut-off corners, the contents being protected by flaps 14, Fig. 1, which when closed down, leave openings 15, 17 to permit inspection of the contents. As the side walls are inclined outwardly from bottom to top, the boxes can be nested when empty. The top edge of the box is strengthened by a bead 25 formed with a groove at the base of each flap to facilitate hinging of the latter or, as an alternative hinge, fabric strips may be employed. The flaps are flexible so as to curve over the contents and they are held down by elastic bands 19, cord, &c. the latter being positioned in grooves 20. Ventilating apertures can be provided in the bottom and side walls. The box may be of metal, moulded from wood pulp, or made up from a blank of paperboard wherein the blunt corners are formed by projections 50, Fig. 17, on the sides and the flexibility of the cover flaps 52 is secured by scoring them longitudinally. The box can also be of diamond or triangular shape to hold a single layer of fruit and with the side walls curved from the base to the upper edge. If a triangular box is made from a blank, the projections 64, Fig. 23, constituting the cut-off corners are stapled to extensions 63 on the side walls 62.
