Abstract

487,812. Making paper &c. containers. SEALCONES, Ltd. (Sealcone International Corporation) July 13, 1937, No. 19378. [Class 18] Paper &c. containers of the kind having a tubular body with a closure secured in one end, the opposite end, constituting the filler opening, being closed by squeezing opposite wall portions together, are made by a method comprising positioning the opposite wall portions together to provide an elongated opening and then, while holding the body portion exteriorly thereof in said condition, securing a closure disc in the opposite end of the body. Paper &c. blanks are fed to and wrapped about a tapered mandrel 30, the longitudinal edge portions being overlapped and secured by a longitudinally extending adhesive strip s, Fig. 26. The formed body B, of truncated conical shape, is transferred at station a to a holder 32, being one of a series carried by an intermittently rotating table 33. Each holder 32 is formed, Figs. 2, 23, 24, with a circular large end 106 and a flattened small end 104, with a roughly elliptical opening 105, whose maximum diameter is approximately that of the large end 106. The inner surface of each holder is grooved longitudinally at 153, Fig. 2, to reduce friction drag on the body B therein, one groove 154 positioning the side seam s of the body B carried thereby. Projections 113 on the holders 32 are engaged by an extension fixed to the machine framing to support the holders against the pressure of the disc-inserting punch at station c. At this station a web of discforming material w is fed intermittently by pawl and ratchet gearing and a circular blank is punched therefrom and flanged by a punch 53 and inserted into the circular large end of the body B by a plunger 63. The end of this body 109 projects somewhat beyond the holder and, in inserting the flanged disc, it is slightly widened, against the end of the holder, to form a seat for the disc. The punch and discinserting mechanism is operated by cam grooves in discs 60, 62, through rollers and plungers, operated by the shaft 28. At station d a rotating and reciprocating spinning head 93, driven by a motor M of cam mechanism, operates to turn over the end of the container body B about the flange of the disc. At station e similar mechanism operates to spin over the folded body end and the disc flange to produce the end seam r. At station g the formed body is ejected. The ejecting mechanism comprises spring biassed telescopic members 155, 156, situated in each holder and actuated by a cam track 168 through a roller 166, the mechanism being carried by slides 125. A head 157 engages the inside of the disc closure to effect ejection of the body from the holder 32 on operation by the cam track. Members 118 are also carried by the slides 125, these members being shaped to correspond with the bottom aperture 105 of the holders and formed with a notched side to register with the side seam s of the body. These members 118 are cam actuated to bear upon the ends of the body in the holder to prevent the same from being too firmly ridged therein during the operations of disc-inserting and end springs.
