[Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Friction surfaces for brakes and clutches are formed with one or more rows of projections of decreasing cross-section towards the apex, and of compressible material so that the surface increases with the applied pressure. Fig. 7 shows a cycle brake block with rows of projections of inverted cup shape. The projections may instead be of conical or pyrimidal form and as shown in Fig. 6 may have a depression 9 to increase the adhesion and facilitate the expansion of the projection. The spaces between the projections form channels for the draining of water and mud.
