487,429. Measuring thickness of sheet material. WILSON, E. G., and WILSON, K. L. Jan. 30, 1937, No. 2757. [Class 106 (ii)] A thickness-feeling device comprising an eccentric surrounded by an antifriction rim turns about an axis above a feeding roller or table between which and the feeling device the leather is placed, such eccentric being associated with indicating or marking means. An eccentric 1 is adapted to rotate on ball bearings 4 about a fixed axis 2 and carries a loose outer ring 3 on ball bearings 5. A lower feeler roller 6 is mounted on ball bearings 8 on a fixed axis 7a, and may be driven to serve as a feed roller for the sheet leather 13 or the latter may move over tubes slidable on a grid-like table. A coiled spring 9 has its ends anchored so that it tends to move the eccentric 1 in the direction of the arrow A, Fig. 4, to maintain a uniform pressure on the leather or to cause the ring 3 to abut against a fixed stop when no leather is passing. To the body 1 is secured a pointer 11 moving over a scale 12 of thicknesses. A collar 14 with stops 14a is adjustably secured on the shaft 2 for engagement with a pin 15 on the body 1. The upper wheel assembly and lower roller 6 are narrow and connected in vertical alignment at the extremities 16a, 16b of a C-shaped frame carried on a pillar 22. The upper assembly is enclosed in a two-part casing 18, 18a through a slot 18b in which the ring 3 protrudes, the roller 6 projecting upwards through a slot in the table 17. The eccentric is raised by turning the shaft 2 which is connected by gears and links to a pedal, or it may be raised by turning the handle 31. The feeler wheel may be held in raised position by a spring pawl engaging the gears at the end of shaft 2 away from the feeler. The roller 6 may be adjusted by turning the handle 36 when the eccentric 35 is turned. The handle is secured by a pin- and-slot 37, 37a. The zero of the scale may be thus adjusted. The lower disc 6 may be constructed like the upper disc. In the form shown in Fig. 7 marking means are provided. A quadrant 39 formed in one with the eccentric 1 and concentric with its outer periphery carries a series of spaced flexible arms of spring metal 40 extending laterally towards the slip ring 3. The body 1 carries a pin 15 adapted to abut against a stop 14a of an adjustable collar 14 fixed to the shaft 2. A hub cap 42 houses a spring 9 arranged normally to tend to maintain the body 1 in its lowermost position with the pin 15 engaging the stop. Each spring arm 40 carries a type block 43. The ring 3 is provided with a series of radially arranged cams 3a while vertically mounted between ring 3 and quadrant 39 is a hammer device 44 operatively connected to ring 3 bv a member such as a roller 45 on an arm 46 secured at the rear of the hammer. As the roller rides up the inclines 3a a spring is tensioned and when the roller leaves the topmost point the hammer 44 is forced down to strike the conical part 43a of the type block 43, which is forced with ribbon 48 against the leather. Justifying means to position the type wheel correctly is described. A plurality of feeler wheels with or without corresponding printing mechanism may be mounted on a common shaft.
