Abstract
487,338. Impedance networks. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BARNARD, R. M. Dec. 18, 1936, No. 34858. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A phase-shifting arrangement which will operate over a range of frequencies comprises a solenoid A with distributed capacity and resistance K to simulate a line, the voltage, the phase of which is to be adjusted, being applied at one end of the line through a variable condenser K1 for adjusting the wavelength of the line, the other end of the line being closed through a resistance R which is adjusted to be equal to the characteristic resistance of the line. When Kl and R have been adjusted to suit the frequency, 180‹ phase shift may be obtained by movement of the contact C along the solenoid. To avoid loading the line the output is taken through a valve amplifier V3. Adjustment of the condenser K1 is effected by means of a valve V1 the grid of which is connected to the centre of the solenoid. The switch S is opened and the switch S2 placed so that the meter M is in the anode circuit of the valve VI. K1 is then adjusted until the meter reading is a minimum. To obtain correct value of R a valve V2 is provided its grid being connected to the output end of the solenoid A. The switch S1 is closed and R is adjusted until the meter reads the same whether it is in the anode circuit of the valve V1 or V2. In a modification two T filters with ganged condensers are used. In this form one of the filters is tapped and only 90‹ phase shift is obtained.
