Abstract

487,321. Valve generating circuits. WHITE, E. L. C. Dec. 12, 1936, No. 34161. [Class 40 (v)] A relaxation oscillator comprises a condenser 8 adapted to be charged, or discharged, at a desired rate whilst an associated valve 1 is nonconducting, the condenser charge restoring instantaneously to its normal value through the grid-cathode space of the valve 1 when flow through a further valve 2 ceases, the two valves being inter-connected by a common impedance 6 in their cathode leads. As shown in Fig. 1, the condenser 8 charges over resistance 9. The valve 2 is conducting so that the cathode 11 of valve 1 is at potential V2, Fig. 4, due to the anode current of valve 2 flowing through resistance 6. As the condenser charges the effective bias of grid 10 becomes less negative so that valve 1 begins to pass anode current. This results in a fall in the potential of anode 12 and this is applied to grid 13 so that the anode current of valve 2 is reduced. This decreases the potential of cathode 11 so that the anode current of valve 1 increases further, the action being cumulative until valve 2 is biassed to cut-off. The potential of cathode 11 falls rapidly as indicated by 26 /24, Fig. 4, and the potential G of the grid 10 follows the cathode potential down to value V1, the condenser 8 discharging over the gridcathode space. The condenser 5 charges through resistance 7 and the anode-cathode space of valve 1, the potential of grid 13 starts rising again, valve 2 begins to conduct, valve 1 is cut off and the cycle repeats. The condenser 8 may be connected in parallel with resistance 9, in which case it charges rapidly and discharges at a desired rate. An alternative arrangement using a pentode is described in which resistance 3 and condenser 5 are connected to the screen grid and the output is taken from the anode. The invention may be used for frequency division or multiplication and for counting impulses, controlling pulses of either positive or negative sense being applied to a suitable point in the circuit.
