Abstract

487,286. Portable buildings ; carpenters' joints. WEBER, A. June 29, 1937, No. 18111. Convention date, July 10, 1936. [Classes 20 (i), 20 (ii), and 87 (i)] The framework of a portable building comprises uprights 5 of cruciform section, horizontal beams 2 having rabbeted upper edges, horizontal cruciform section beams 8 supported on the tops of the uprights, and base blocks 1 which are recessed to receive the ends of the beams 2 and uprights. The various beams and uprights are interconnected by floor and wall panels 4, 7. As shown in Fig. 4, the base-block has a cross-shaped recess la, the centre of which receives the base of an upright and the limbs of which receive the tenons 2a of the beams 2. The wall panels 7 each comprises a wooden frame 7a, Fig. 26, to which are secured two boards 7b, 7c, enclosing a layer of cork or other insulating material. The panel carries internally screw-threaded sleeves 20 which engage with screws 21 passing through the uprights. The beams 8, Fig. 10, have tenons 8a which carry pins 8b adapted to fit into holes 5c formed in the upper faces of the uprights. To form a roof or upper storey, the uprights may be extended by members 9 having lower faces which are suitably recessed to fit over the beams 8 which meet at the upright. As shown in Fig. 3, further uprights 6 are arranged between the uprights .5 and 9 and have mortise and tenon joints with the beams 2 and 8. These additional uprights are of T-section and the rabbeted edges thereof are adapted to receive the edges of the wall panels. Similar members are also arranged between the beams 2 to support the floor panels. The roof comprises a number of T- section rafters 10, the upper ends of which have downwardly extending pins which fit into holes in the members 9 while the lower ends are suitably recessed and shaped to fit over and embrace the upstanding ribs of the beams 8. The panels 12 of the roof are secured to the rafters and to intermediate rafters 22 of T- section. As shown in Fig. 23, the edges of the panels 12 are recessed to receive a covering strip 14 which is secured to the panels by bolts 17a, 17b. The bolts 17a project from a metal cap 17 which covers the upper rib of the beam 8. A similar arrangement may be provided for securing a ridge plate over the panels meeting at the ridge of a shelter having a gable roof. In such an arrangement all of the securing bolts project from the metal cap of the beam.
