Abstract

486,837. Vehicle spring - suspensions. GOLDSCHMIDT, M. (Leighton, J. W.) Oct. 18, 1937, No. 28257. [Class 108 (ii)] In an independent quadrilateral wheel suspension for vehicles of the kind comprising a pair of pivoted V- shaped levers or wishbones, one or both of the arms of the wishbone is cranked at an angle and supported in a preferably threaded bearing extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the arm 10 has a cranked and threaded extension 80 which is supported in a pair of internally threaded sleeves 81, 82 disposed within the ends of a tubular member 83 carried by a bracket 87 on the vehicle frame, the structure being completed by a second arm 45 threaded on to the extension 80 at 96 and bolted at its outer end to the outer end of the arm 10. At its outer extremity .the arm 10 is cranked rearwardly and threaded for engagement by an eccentric sleeve 21 carried by the axlecarrier 22, rotation of the sleeve 21 effecting a camber adjustment of the wheel. The other extremity of the arm 10 may be connected through the medium of a rubber bushing 104, 105 with an arm 101 of a shock-absorber. The lower wishbone may be of a somewhat similar construction, but with the outer ends of both arms 10, 45 threaded internally to engage a common threaded pin. In a modification, the bearing sleeves 81, 82 are replaced by rubber sleeves which are compressed to grip the extension 80 and are stressed in shear or torsion as the arm 10 oscillates. In a further construction, Fig. 6, both arms 163 of the wishbone are cranked, and their inner ends 169 are united either by welding or by an internally threaded coupling sleeve.
