Abstract
Leather, fur, textiles, grain, cereals, foodstuffs and potable liquids are deinfested or purified by subjecting them to radiations emitted by a resistance element electrically heated so as to produce a maximum emission peak between 8000-10000A\s2. Preferably the wavelength of maximum emission lies between 8000-8500 A\s2 and such radiations may be produced by an incandescent gas-filled lamp with a filament heated to about 3400\s2 K., the gas filling consisting of 86 per cent argon and 14 per cent nitrogen. The radiations may be collected and concentrated on the materials, e.g. by suitable reflectors, shields and filters &c., and are stated to destroy insects, micro-organisms, parasites, fungi, bacteria, &c.
