Abstract

486,394. Discharge lamps. VEREINIGTE GLUHLAMPEN UND ELEKTRICITATS AKT.-GES. Oct. 26, 1937, No. 29223. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-pressure metallic vapour lamp, the bulb has its greatest internal dimension less than 20 mms. and its smallest dimension greater than the distance between the electrodes, and at least one electrode has two parts, one of which is activated and is heated by the other part which is not activated but is heated by thermal conduction or radiation from the discharge. In the form shown, the spherical refractory glass bulb 1 has a diameter of 5-6 mms. and contains two electrodes spaced 2 mms. apart and each consisting of an activated tungsten rod 4 surrounded by a helix 3. The filling is a rare gas at 25 mms. pressure and mercury and the lamp dissipates 10 watts on 110 volts supply with an efficiency of 35-40 lumens / watt. In other forms of electrode, the activating material may be coated at the bottom of a metal cap, or on a rod surrounded by a metal cylinder or by a helix 11, Fig. 4, wound on a second coil 12 directly surrounding the rod 10.
