Abstract
486,206. Removing refuse from buildings; elevators; platform hoists; sanitary pails. SHERWOOD, J. Dec. 7, 1936, No. 33577. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iii)] [Also in Group I] Refuse is removed from multi-storied buildings by a hoist carrying dust bins, or platforms supporting them, which stand normally at a filling position adjacent the level of each floor ; the whole system being lowerable so that successive bins can be removed in the basement for emptying. In the preferred construction a series of superposed platforms are carried by chains connected to a winch and the platforms lie on one another to form a compact stack as the lowering continues after successive bins are removed. In the form shown the well or shaft a, Fig. 1, is provided with openings at each floor normally closed by hinged traps k which form delivery shoots when opened. Corner ribs or recesses in the well form guides for a series of platforms carried by chains or ropes f leading to a handoperated or power-driven storage drum or winch i. The dust bins on the platforms normally occupy a position adjacent the trap on each floor, and are loaded by opening the traps and shooting the rubbish directly into them. By lowering the chains the bins can be run down to the basement and removed in turn for emptying ; the platforms collapsing on top of one another during the process. In some cases the chains f may be endless, and pass round sprockets at the bottom similar to those at the top of the lift. By lowering the perforated slide bar l prior to lowering the chains, the unperforated parts are brought into register with the traps, thus closing any trap which may be open and locking the traps in closed positions. This operation may retract the traps clear of the well without applying a complete and forcible closure, thus avoiding injury by trapping of the hand of a person trying to open the trap at that moment. The positioning of this slide bar may be automatic, by the engagement of the edges of the platforms with the lugs m, n. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the axial movement of a rod S operates a pair of sliding doors l<2> forming the trap at each floor. Fig. 10 shows a construction in which the opening of the trap k raises the hinged lid h<1> of the dust bin through the contact of the projections k<1>, k<2> on the trap and lid respectively. In a modification a rope or chain is interposed between the trap and lid to effect the actuation. Also loose lids with charging holes formed therein may be fitted on the bins and lowered with them, or lids hinged to the walls of the well may be employed. As a modification of the use of bins supported on platforms, the bins themselves may be removably attached to the chains. The weight of the platforms, bins and estimated part load may be balanced. Folding supports on the platforms may be turned up to embrace, hold and locate the bins thereon. Sliding keps in the shaft under each platform may relieve the chains of the weight while the bins stand at the loading position.
