Abstract

486,205. Hydraulic shock absorbers. KIMBER, A. W. Dec. 7, 1936, No. 33532. [Class 108(iii)] In a piston-and-cylinder type of shock-absorber in which resistance to the piston is effected by the flow of fluid through a series of ports of progressively decreasing areas, the hydraulic resistance tc the rebound of a spring is applied only when such spring has, after receipt of a sudden shock, regained its normal flexure, such resistance increasing progressively in proportion to the extent of the rebound. In the position shown, the spring supporting the vehicle is in its normal position When the spring is compressed the piston E moves toward the end of the cylinder D and liquid is discharged through the space between removable ring h and end g of the cylinder and also through the ring of non-return valves p in the piston without applying resistance to the plunger. On the rebound, the piston moves back to its normal position without encountering any resistance and thereafter covers ports k<1>, k<2> ... M<1>, M2 in succession to apply a gradually progressive resistance to the plunger. Tapering slots may replace the holes k<1> &c. in the walls of the cylinder. A reservoir C<1> in the cover forms an oil reservoir and communicates through non- return valve q with the cylinder. A filling plug u and channel t communicates with the cylinder and a slotted vent e is formed at the top end of the cylinder D and communicates with the oil reservoir formed between the two cylinders A, D.
