Abstract

485,330. Collapsable vehicles. PURDEY, P. J., and PURDEY, M. C. April 23, 1937, No. 11603. [Class 108 (i)] A laterally expansible mider-frame for flat trucks or vehicles such as caravans, travelling shops, &c., with expansible bodies comprises a pair of side members c<1>, c<2> carried by pairs of horizontal bars b<1>, b<2> slidable in guide brackets d, e on the frame longitudinals a<5>, a<6> and crossmembers a<1>, a<4> respectively and adapted for outward and inward displacement by a common means of control. Additional support may be provided by end bars o<1>, o<2> of channel formation adapted to ride on rollers n<1>, n<2> carried by plates attached to the end cross-members a<7>, a<8> of the frame. The bars on opposite sides are arranged to pass one another, being relatively displaced, the bars b<1>, b<2> horizontally and the end bars o<1>, o<2>, together with the sets of guide rollers n<1>, n2, vertically. As shown, the bars bl, b<2> are formed as toothed racks in mesh with pinions i, h operated by a common control shaft f provided with a hand wheel f<1> and locking means in the form of a sleeve k, Fig. 6, pressed into engagement with a friction face l by means of an adjustable hand wheel threaded on the shaft. Alternatively, the shaft f may be operated from the interior of the vehicle by means of a suitably located vertical shaft connected thereto by bevel gearing &c. In place of the rack-and-pinion gearing, the bars b<1>, b<2> may be connected to the control shaft f by drum and cable or like gearing.
