484,762. Variable resistors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 13, 1937, No. 19396. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1936. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL] An electrical regulating device of the kind comprising a resistor having a high temperature-resistance coefficient and heated by a second resistor, has the first resistor in the form of a hollow self-supporting cylindrical body surrounding the heating resistor, the two resistors being located in a gas-filled space so that convection currents outside the first resistor are unhindered while those between the resistors are hindered. In order to hinder the convection currents, caps may be provided, or the gap between the resistors is made not more than three millimetres and preferably one millimetre wide. The first resistor may be of uranium dioxide or magnesium titanate, and the heater of tungsten or molybdenum. The gas-filling may be hydrogen, and at a pressure between 10 and 300 millimetres. Nitrogen or argon can be employed as a gas-filling, and the first resistor may be formed by squirting a paste containing magnesium and titanium oxides. A tubular member so formed is then heated to 1100 C. for one hour in air and thereafter to 1400-1500 C. in damp hydrogen. The heating resistor may be of constantan, or a known semi-conductor. A construction employing a tube 1 of uranium dioxide and a heater 2 tensioned by a spring 3 is shown. The device can be employed to prevent the current through a discharge tube varying with supply voltage, or with " hardening " of the tube ; for volume control in wireless circuits and for control of electric incandescent lamps. The resistors can be coupled to cause regular fluctuations in a lamp circuit for signalling purposes. Specification 417,665 is referred to.
