[Classes 60 and 145 (ii)] Apparatus for cutting wire ropes, cables, &,c. by means of an abrasive disc, a reciprocating abrasive tool, or a toothed or plain saw, comprises a carriage 10 mounted on wheels 12, 13 and having pivotally mounted at 17, on a platform 11 on the carriage, a frame 16 carrying an electric motor 19 driving an abrasive disc 14 running in a hood 22 provided with a handle 23 for moving the disc 14 to and from the rope. The rope 24 rests on a saddle 25, mounted on the platform and slotted to receive the disc 14, and in order that the ends of the rope may, as the cutting proceeds, be moved clear of the disc 14, to avoid jamming and breakage, a bending strain is applied to the rope by means of clamps situated adjacent to the side faces of the disc. The clamps comprise lever arms 26, 27 joined bv a bar 31 and pivoted in brackets 30 on the platform, each bar 31 carrying two outwardly projecting rods 33. On the rods 33 are secured, one on each pair of rods, clamp housings 34 in each of which are two clamping members 37, 38 held in gripping contact with the rope by a pivoted cover bar 40 and a pin 41 and nut 42. Integral with each bar 31 is a rocker arm 45 having pivoted thereto a link 45, the links being pivoted at their lower end to a cross-head 47 in which is slidable a sleeve 50 having secured thereto a nut 52, the sleeve also carrying a spring 48 between the crosshead 47 and a flange 49. In order to tension the spring to apply the bending force to the rope, a shaft 54 having a threaded portion 53 engaging the nut passes through the sleeve and is rotatably supported by the platform, rotation of the shaft being brought about through helical gearing 56, 57, by a hand wheel 59. The clamps 34 may be adjustable along the arms 45, for different ropes, by providing holes in the arms to be engaged by dowels 70 which also engage the clamps 34. In a modification, one clamping device only is movable by the spring, the other being secured to the platform 11.
