Abstract

484,511. Ornamenting. ROGERS RADIO TUBES, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1936, No. 35251. Convention date, Jan. 11. [Class 93] [Also in Group XX] A coating of powder is formed on a surface as of metal or glass, e.g. a luminescent coating on a cathode-ray tube, by cleaning the surface, exposing it to the products of incomplete combustion of a compound of sulphur in order to form by condensation a layer of sulphur on the surface, dusting finely powdered material evenly on the layer, removing excess of powder, and then heating to evaporate the sulphur layer, so that the powder coating is left adhering directly to the surface. The Figure shows an apparatus wherein the end of a cleaned cathode-ray tube is coated with sulphur produced by burning carbon bisulphide contained in a holder 4 heated electrically by a coil 5, in a slow draught produced by an aspirator attached at 8, the products of combustion being drawn up a tube 2 with a jacket 7 leading to the aspirator tube 8 and being dispersed over the end wall of the ray tube 1 by a plug 6 on the top of tube 2. After wiping off any undesired sulphur at the edge of the layer, powdered luminescent material such as synthetic willemite activated with manganese, or zinc sulphide from which copper and other impurities have been removed, is dusted on evenly the excess wiped off, and heat applied to evaporate the sulphur. Specification 458,635, [Group XX], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the condensation layer may be formed by exposure to the products of incomplete combustion of compounds of other elements. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
