Abstract

482,268. Fracture appliances. MULLER, O. Dec. 2, 1937, No. 33354. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1936. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] An instrument, facilitating the positioning and insertion of the pin or nail driven axially through the neck of the femur in cases of fracture thereof, comprises a parallelogram frame having sides constituted respectively by a bar 1, Fig. 2, a guide 2, a locating pin 4 carried by a bent shank 5 sliding in the guide, and the nail 6 carried in a spring clip 3 with a locking screw 14 on the end of bar 1. In use the nail 6 is removed and the pin 4 pressed through the flesh into a position, in contact with the head of the femur, checked by the taking of skiagrams. The clip 3 is then brought into contact with the previously exposed upper end of the femoral shaft, the slide being adjusted for this purpose and then looked by a screw 7. A scale 8 of the slide indicates the length of nail required. The selected nail is then inserted in the clip 3 and driven by hammering, through the femoral neck. The nail 6 is preferably of angular section having a riveted-on circular head 11 as shown in Fig. 3.
