Abstract
482,135. Mounting aero - engines in wings. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., OWNER, F. M., and COPLEY, J. W. May 4, 1937, No. 25962. [Class 4] An aeroplane is provided with a wing built of two or more detachable sections, one of which contains the engine which is of the horizontally-opposed cylinder type, having its crankshaft-axis lying fore and aft of the wing and is supported near the middle and at the rear by frames which are fastened to the end of spar portions in the adjacent wing sections. In Fig. 1 a wing root section 11 is permanently attached to the fuselage 10. A middle section 12 containing the engine is adjacent the root portion 11 and a tip portion 14 completes the wing. The middle section of the wing comprises a forward and rearward frame each comprising upper and lower channelsection boom-portions 15, 16, Figs. 2 and 3, connected by vertical members 17, 18 and diagonal members 23, 24. The members 23, 24 may be arranged in the chain-and-dot position depending on the rotation of the engine and the side of the aeroplane on which the section is carried. The forward and rearward frames are connected by members 31. The engine is mounted on the frames by means of flanges 39 which enter the channels of the boom-portions and are-riveted and bolted thereto. The ends of the boom portions are formed with lugs 47-50 by means of which this section is connected to the root and tip portions of the wing. In a modification the engine crankcase is connected by blocks to the boom-portions which are connected by cross-shaped braces, or diagonal members may be connected between the boom-portions and lugs on the crankcase. In a further modification the flanges 39 form a part of the profile of the wing and are formed with lugs to which short boom-portions are attached connected together by vertical and diagonal members.
