Abstract

482,091. Locking levers and rods. HOUPLAIN, R. B. June 22, 1937, No. 17353. Convention date, June 29, 1936. [Class 80 (iii)] A member 3, Fig. 4, is normally locked against rotation in either direction by means of balls or rollers 8 which are wedged by springs 12 between cam surfaces on the member 3 and a drum 4 which is capable of rotation but which is normally maintained stationary, but the member 3 is adapted to be driven in either direction by driving dogs 1 which engage with play in recesses in the member 3, the dogs, during their initial movement to take up the play, displacing the adjacent balls from locking position. The drum 4 is normally maintained stationary by means of a brake or, as shown, by being formed as a worm wheel gearing with a worm 14 and constituting an irreversible gear. In the first case, the member 3 can drive the dogs and the drum on release of the brake, while in the second case the drum can be rotated, and with it the member 3 and the dogs, by turning the worm 14, as by a handle 15. Antifriction balls or rollers may be interposed between the dogs and the balls 8. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following arrangements. As shown in Fig 6. (Cancelled), an activating lever L journalled on a fixed shaft A has a dog P engaging with play in a recess in an actuated arm B, the latter being normally looked against rotation in either direction by spring-urged balls 21 wedging between the shaft A and cam surfaces in the arm B. Pins 23 projecting from the lever L act to unlock the arm B during movement of lever L. The pins 23 may be tapered, as shown in Fig. 8 (Cancelled), and a spring 27 be interposed between the lever L and arm B, the dog P then engaging without play in its recess. In this case, lever L is first moved axially towards arm B, so as to unwedge the balls 21, and is then turned to actuate the arm. As shown in Fig. 9 (Cancelled), an actuated member O slidable on a fixed shaft X is normally locked to the shaft by spring-urged wedging balls 31, but is adapted to be moved by an actuating member N which, during its movement, first unlocks the member O through a ball race C or D. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
