Abstract

481,683. Making coated poppet valves &c. OUBRIDGE, W. A., and CARPENTER, E. Nov. 21, 1936, No. 31897. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-In a method of depositing one metal or alloy on the rectilinear, circular or annular surface of another, particularly for coating the seats or faces of poppet valves with an alloy such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite," the molten metal is deposited on the surface from opposite directions simultaneously so that after the surface is covered the ends of the deposited metal meet one another at the same temperature. The preheated work and the deposit are thus prevented from cooling unduly before the coating is completed, and the tendency to crack is thus prevented. The article is subsequently allowed to cool slowly. The heated valve v is placed in a heated copper block x mounted on an insulating washer t in a support e carried by a spindle b fixed to a base a. Around the spindle is mounted a table c which is rotated on ball bearings c<1> by a belt and carries a holder f provided with a torch g and stick h of the metal to be deposited. A second table d mounted on ball bearings d<1> on the table c and connected thereto by crown gear j, j<1> and pinions k so that it rotates in the opposite direction to the table c, carries a similar holder f<1> with torch g<1> and metal rod h<1>. The metal rods are adjustably secured by screws s, s<1>, in slidable blocks m, m<1> which are retracted by springs and fed forward as consumed by wires or cables o, o<1> secured thereto and to-grooved collars p, p<1> on the spindle b. The operation is started with both holders at the point A and is completed when they both reach the point B. A pair of holders may be mounted at the opposite ends of a diameter of each table so that the four holders may complete the operation by rotating the tables in opposite directions through 90‹. The return movement of the tables may be effected by springs or reversing gear. For operating on rectilinear surfaces the holders may be mounted on slides moving simultaneously in opposite directions.
