Abstract
481,494. Making welding electrodes. KOHLEUND EISENFORSCHUNG GES. Oct. 30, 1937, No. 29685. Convention date, Jan. 19. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Arc - welding electrodes containing cores of flux or the like are made by rolling or drawing blanks consisting of two or more superposed blocks, preferably square or oblong, provided on their abutting surfaces with longitudinal grooves to receive the flux or the like. Blocks 1, 2 formed with grooves 4 by rolling or machining are superposed and welded continuously or intermittently along their edges 6, the flux &c. being inserted either before or after assembly. The welding of the blocks may alternatively be effected during the rolling or drawing operation. The blank is rolled &c. down to circular form as shown in Fig. 1a or elliptical or other form to produce an electrode with a flux &c. core. In another form the two blocks may each have a single central semi-circular groove to produce an electrode with a central flux core. In a further form, Fig. 3, four superposed blocks may be used with grooves so as to provide a number of cores 8-12. The central core may contain alloying material and the outer cores substances for stabilizing and ionizing the arc and also for forming slag and protective gas. The blocks may be provided with grooves of different sizes or shapes so as to vary the action of the electrode, e.g. the central core may be larger than the outer cores.
