480,937. Drilling &c. machines. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23471. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1936. Addition to 480,899. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXV] In a portable power-driven tool for drilling &c. the clutch described in the parent Specification has the springs mounted near the periphery of the clutch so as to be freely accessible to air cooling over their whole length. The motor casing is in two parts 1, 2 and the short-circuit armature 11 of the motor is secured to a hollow shaft 12 mounted at one end in a bearing in the end plate 7. A spindle 13 passing through the shaft 12 is mounted in bearings in the end plates 2, 7 and is connected by gearing to a drill-spindle arranged at right-angles thereto. A driving member 14 is keyed to the shaft 12 and carries lugs 14b which engage notches in the periphery of clutch plates 16, the alternate clutch plates 17 being notched to a central nut 18 mounted on quick-pitch threads 13a on the driven shaft 13. Axial pressure is applied to the clutch plates by springs 22 surrounding pins 21 which are riveted at one end to a pressure plate 19 and are attached to a ring 23 by pins 25. The springs 22 abut on the ring 23 and press a pressure plate 20 towards the plate 19. Fan blades 20a are provided on the plate 20 to draw air through holes 2b in the casing 2 and direct it over the springs and then through holes 2a, and fan blades 14a on the member 14 draw air through the motor and pass it out through holes 1a in the casing 1. The pressure plates 19, 20 engage opposite sides of the nut 18 through thrust bearings 26 so that if the drill meets excessive resistance the nut will screw along the shaft 13 in one direction or the other, according to its direction of rotation, and carry with it one of the plates so as to free the clutch plates and stop the drive. Bolts 15 passing through the lugs 14b prevent axial motion of one of the plates 19, 20 when the clutch is released. An angle casing on the end of the tool, which supports the drill spindle, also supports a rotatable feed screw in line with the drill.
