Abstract

480,590. Delivering material from hoppers. BARNSDALE, F. H. July 23, 1936, Nos. 20454/36 and 17035/37. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups I and XIII] Apparatus for treating loose flowable material such as grain or granular minerals with steam, warm air, gases, insecticides or heat comprises a tower or bin 1 in which are arranged a number of inverted-V-section supporting members 7 sheltering gas pipes fed by supply pipes 9 and also at the bottom of the bin a sloping series of transverse members 3 through the openings between which the material under treatment can fall on to the upper reach of a conveyer chain 6 that moves continuously across the floor of the bin towards the raised end of the series of transverse members 3. The conveying apparatus is preferably of the type described in Specification 159,236, [Class 78 (iv)]. To ensure the flow of the material being regular the bin may increase in cross section towards its base or the transverse members 7 may diminish in width towards the bottom of the bin. The conveyer chain 6 is driven by a sprocket on a shaft 6B actuated from a shaft 11 of a gear box to which power is supplied from a motor 14 by a belt 13. The shaft 11 also drives a governor 15A controlling the supply of treating fluid to the bin, a feeding device 16A for the material to be treated and also, if necessary, a device 16B for supplying water to the material. To control the speed of the motor 14 in accordance with the demand the treated material is taken by an elevator 21 to a conveyer 22A of which the return stretch 22B is adapted to carry back excess or unconsumed material and to discharge it into a hopper 18 through which it falls. This hopper is suspended by a cable 17 and counter balanced by a weight 17C the movements of the cable due to fluctuation in the amount of material in the hopper at any instant actuating a control device 17A on the motor. In a modification the hopper carries a vane that is moved between a source of light and light sensitive cells the current output from which actuates means for controlling the speed of the motor.
