[Class 78 (iv)] In apparatus for transferring removable load-containers between a railway and a road vehicle, of the kind in which the road vehicle is provided with guideways and propelling chains for guiding and moving the containers and also with pivoted transfer bridges at the rear for coupling to the side of the railway vehicle, the road vehicle is formed with bumpers or buffers at the ends of the guideways adjacent the bridges to secure exact, spacing between the car and railway truck and to protect the bridges during transport on the road, and the bridges themselves are shortened and of special construction. In the illustrated form the road vehicle is of the tractor-trailer type and the transfer mechanism is carried by the trailer. Two castings 10, bolted to the rear of the trailer, are each furnished with a projecting bumper 60 and carry bearings for a chain sprocket 22 and a cross-shaft 20 geared to a motor on the trailer. The drive of the propelling chains in both directions is communicated to the containers bv means of rigid connecting arms. The sprocket shaft 21 also carries a loose roller 31 and forms a pivot for a bail 32 carrying other rollers 35, 37 ; the bail and the three rollers forming one of the pivoted bridge members. The shaft 40 of the roller 37 projects beyond the bail at both ends and is adapted to engage turn-out brackets 50 pivoted to the truck, and be locked against detachment by the bar 45 with cranked ends. The bumper 60 engages a wooden bumper 58 on the car to position the parts for attachment. Should the vehicle not be backed squarely against the truck, one bail is engaged first, and then further backing of the vehicle causes it to pivot on this bail until the other bumper engages and the bail on the other side can be attached. During transit on the road, the bails rest on projections 62 in the bumpers and are protected by the latter.
