Abstract

Alcohols containing astringent salts are prepared in semi-solid form by addition of small amounts of natural or synthetic wax together with a fatty acid or an ester thereof, or a metallic soap to modify the tendency of the wax to granulate. The alcohol may be ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol or mixtures thereof, and may be pure or denatured, as with brucine sulphate, tertiary butyl alcohol and methanol. The wax may be candelilla, carnauba, spermaceti, or beeswax or mixtures thereof. The modifier may be stearic, lauric, myristic, palmitic or oleic acid, or ethyl, butyl, or glycol stearate, glycol oleate, mutton tallow, coconut oil, or zinc or aluminium salts of stearic or other fatty acid. Water, up to 10 per cent of the whole may be added.ALSO:A semi-solid preparation for application to the skin to deodorize or inhibit perspiration contains a large proportion of ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol or mixtures thereof, aluminium and/or zinc chloride in sufficient quantity to serve as an astringent, and small amounts of natural or synthetic wax and of a fatty acid or an ester thereof, or a metallic soap such as aluminium stearate to modify any tendency to granulation of the wax. The alcohol used may be pure or may be denatured, as with brucine sulphate, tertiary butyl alcohol and methanol. Suitable waxes are candelilla, carnauba, spermaceti and beeswax or mixtures thereof. The modifier may be stearic lauric, myristic, palmitic or oleic acid, or ethyl, butyl or glycol stearate, glycol oleate, mutton tallow, coconut oil, or zinc or aluminium salts of the fatty acids, the metal base of the modifier and of the astringent salt preferably being the same. The astringent salt may be anhydrous or not, and water not exceeding 10 per cent of the total weight may be added.
