Abstract
480,060. Testing physical qualities of materials. KOHLEUND EISENFORSCHUNG GES. April 8, 1937, No. 9966. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1936. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises means for obtaining a uniform temperature over the length of the specimen under test, more particularly hot tensile and hot static load endurance tests by the insertion of bodies of good heat conducting material, characterized in that the body sc closely surrounds the specimen that the heat is conveyed to the specimen chiefly by conduction without interfering with the expansion of the test piece. A hollow body 2 of copper made in two halves adapted to be secured together by screws and, of a section to conform with that of the specimen 1, in the present instance, cylindrical, encloses the specimen with a small amount of play and is secured to it at the upper end by studs 5, 6. The length of the body is chosen so that there is just room in the test length above and below to secure the measuring springs 9, 10 with their knife edges without limiting the movement of the copper body. The springs actuate a mirror 13 in the usual way. In a modification, the copper body is divided transversely into two parts which fit into one another. In this case each part is secured to the specimen. The extensometer springs are formed in one with rings to which the pins 5, 6 are screwed. The pins pass through clearance holes in the body parts so as not to interfere with their movements. For measuring the temperature, thermo elements 19 may be lodged in the body at equal distances over the test length and close to the surface of the specimen.
