Abstract

533,247. Testing physical qualities of materials. SVENSKA TURBINFABRIKS AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROM. Oct. 21, 1939, No. 28420. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1938. [Class 106 (ii)] Two equal bars 1, 2 of the material to be tested are arranged in such manner in relation to an indicating device, that, when variations in the length occur they will act oppositely to each other on the indicating device, whereupon one, the test bar 1 is subjected to a tensile load and its elongation relatively to the non-loaded comparison bar 2 is measured. The test bar 1 is secured at one end to a holder 3 anchored by an adjustable screw and nut 11 to a base 10. At the other end the bar 1 is screwed into a holder 4 connected by a pin 12 to a load lever 14 pivoted at 13. The bar 2 is secured to the lower holder 3 but slides in a bar in the upper holder 4. Quartz rods 18, 19 slide in bores in the upper holder and engage the upper ends of the bars. The pointed upper end of rod 18 engages the end of a lever 20 pivoting about an edge 24 carried by a lever 21 resting on the pointed end of rod 19 and on a pointed rod 22 the other end of which rests on an adjustable support 23. The bars are surrounded by a cylinder 6 of cast iron surrounded by a heating coil 7 which in turn is surrounded by insulating material 8. Tests may thus be carried out while the bars are heated and the effects on the bars due to heat cancel each other out. A weighted filament 28 attached to the lever 20 at 25 passes over a roller 27 carrying a mirror 26 reflecting a light beam on a scale.
